Defending Yourself Against Colds and the Flu

The flu and the common cold are both illnesses that are focused on the respiratory (lungs, etc.) system, but they are caused by different viruses. The common cold is caused by more than 200 different viruses, and the flu by a strain called influenza.  (Antibiotics are useless for treating colds or the flu since they cannot kill viruses.)

Many people view colds as annoying and inconvenient, but for some people in high-risk categories (those with asthma, emphysema, diabetes or other pre-existing conditions) hospitalization or death may follow infection.  The CDC reports that each year, an estimated 200,000 are hospitalized and 36,000 Americans die.  Regrettably, 80% to 90% of the deaths are in people age 65 and older.

There is only one way to protect yourself from disease, and that is by having an immune system that is prepared to attack invading microorganisms. You are less likely to develop a cold if your immune system is functioning properly.

Following the following steps will help keep your immune system functioning at optimum levels:

  • Eat healthful meals - emphasize whole grain foods and plenty of colorful vegetables and fruits.

  • Get adequate amounts of rest and avoid fatigue.
